Master Au Yeung Cheong is a signboard calligrapher who was based in the now shuttered State Theatre arcade. A once commonplace profession in Hong Kong, their work shaped the entire visual landscape of Hong Kong’s neighbourhoods. What makes Au Yeung’s work particularly recognisable is his use of Zan Script (真體字). ‘A script of officials and royalty’, according to the master. This zines is an autobiographical account of his life-long journey with Zan Script.
